Spell Checkers and Less Resourced Languages

After two years of trying to get my language back adding loads of text to our Franconian website and trying to write myself without really getting it, the otherday it simply "started". Words and sentences came out on their own, just like a stream. At that stage I started to create a wordlist to be used for various software and one of them was creating a spell chekcer for Franconian (ISO 639-3 code vmf).

We reached our goal ... :-)

It's just two weeks ago that I started to merge the dictionary data for Ambaradan in our loader application: this is needed to make sure data is in the right shape and we won't loose any.

Well, this morning I told Outi that Joola, one of the languages she cares about, was uploaded and she wrote she'll never forget this day: the last day of the Football World Championship and Joola online.

Werner Eichelberg - dictionaries were part of his life

The other day I thought, well, as soon as I finished cleaning my data I should contact Werner again, I had been in touch with by-email and phone since 2005 when he gave me the permission to publish any of his data under GFDL license and part of it was also published on the Italian and the Low Saxon wiktionary.

Some Housecleaning and Some Statistics

Some of you might already know that we have a "translation stop" since we are now preparing the data for upload in Ambaradan. The first step was to clean double entries and similar stuff from the spreadsheet, get some more proofreading done etc. Nilli helped a lot with the double entries :-)

Some "history":

How relevant is UI-design?

It's one of those questions, right? Well: it is VERY relevant, even more than functionality.

Editing Parley ... it's so easy that kids can do

I was editing some files in Parley for my kids to be done this summer, they don't like paper work and if I create exercises for them, well then they are also available for translation and use by anyone else.

First steps with an alpha version of Ambaradan

In Randa at the KDE Multimedia + Education sprint 2010 we presented the alpha version 0.6.0 of Ambaradan and extracted the actually included terminology from the Agrovoc Thesaurus by FAO to get a Parley vocabulary trainer file. Even if this was only a first test, now the information is around and people will want to know more.

Right now Ambaradan can be only used to search vocabulary. In the coming weeks and months more and more data will be availabe and it will become possible to edit data directly online.

KDE Education and Multimedia Sprint ... some results ...

Actually it is impossible to collect all achieved results in one single article. Compared to all other events we went to, this was the most productive one and we will need months to actually work on all that will need to be done. Let's try to point out what interests our users most: language learning.

Learning Mathematics with Parley ... but not only

I just finished to check the homework of my kids. They are doing their first steps with fractions right now. The association is always fraction/picture that represents it to explain. I need to make some exercises about that, that can be done by using the computer - now I do have a problem. I can do things like
